Paul Rogers illustrates LEGO website campaign

Lego Systems has a new online campaign called Build Together Road Trip. If you are going on a trip, you’ll need a map to navigate five Destinations, ten Landmarks and onto the virtual activities. Click on any of the illustrated locations to play a game, watch movies, download postcards and collect travel stickers together with a friend or parent. I was quite captivated by the movie about how the Tower Bridge was designed and built, go to Drive in Theatre. This is a great example of an established product making headway into virtual reality. The site keeps kids online longer offering interesting bits of information making it educational and fun for all. One piece of advice, when Lego calls assume everything in the brief will need to look as if it were build of bricks with knobs on them. Doh!

Paul says this about the project: "This online game for Lego uses a Road Trip theme, so I dug into the rich look of American roadside architecture and mixed in some Lego motifs. It was a fun challenge to fit all the requested elements onto a map that would look good and function well for kids and their parents."

Creative Director Keith Malone first saw Paul's The Incredibles poster as inspiration. Keith says: "When The LEGO Company decided to market to Dads for the first time, we knew that we needed a different look and feel from our kid targeted advertising. The challenge was to find an expression that still reflected the core fun of our brand but would also draw upon a style that would resonate with this older consumer base, "new nostalgic". Enter Paul Rogers! His style was a perfect match for our concept. Having never worked with Paul before and dealing with a very tight deadline, the team worried that we would be able to have him "get" the brand and be able to execute on time. No worries there, Paul delivered on schedule and beyond our expectations creating art for a truly unique consumer experience. The team here at LEGO is looking forward to working with Paul again in the future."

Paul Rogers designs US Open theme art

The US Open Tennis Championship is using theme art designed this year by Paul Rogers. The artwork will be used on banners, tickets, programs, t-shirts, and all types of souvenirs. The tournament runs from August 31-September 13.

Marc Jacobson of the Silverman Group called this winter to see if Paul wanted to submit designs to the USTA. The brief for the project required that any player depicted be generic enough to be either male or female. New York City was a key element, and the flaming ball logo for the US Open had to appear in the final art. Other key words from the brief were “entertainment spectacle," "toughest tennis," and "high energy."

Marc liked a number of the sketches, and Paul developed six color images for presentation to the USTA. On a project like this, Paul tends to over-produce these concept sketches because he doesn’t want to lose the project because of a half-hearted execution of an idea. During the pencil stage, he thought he could successfully execute a strong treatment of a player that would be generic enough to be either male or female. But as he tightened up the image, the figure kept tipping one way or the other, or it just looked like a dude in a skirt. Everyone liked the bridge/tennis net idea. The Brooklyn Bridge doesn’t exactly lead to Queens, so they looked at some other bridge options, but in the end they kept Brooklyn as the strongest symbol of New York.

The music of Fats Waller and the era of the Harlem Renaissance are full of wonderful imagery. He borrowed some of the spirit of the great illustrator Miguel Corvarrubias to make this poster swing.

The Ahmanson Theatre production lasts until the end of May. Please visit Center Theatre Group's website for more info.

Artist Hanoch Piven Creates Strauss Ad Campaign

During the last 6 months, Hanoch Piven has been working on a large ad campaign in Israel for the Strauss Group, a food and beverage company. He has created 12 characters using their products. The campaign's message is "It's amazing what you can create from the simple things in life." Hanoch has spent the last few months in his sister's basement creating television and billboard ads out of chocolates, yogurt, candy, vegetables, and many other Strauss products. He had to hide the candy from his nephews in order to do his work. Strauss says, "internationally-acclaimed artist Hanoch Piven...uses basic products and turns them into something new, big and surprising. Piven created a set of characters comprised of our raw materials…adding his own unique artistic statement to them." Below are links to the four different commercials on YouTube, and the Strauss website featuring Hanoch's creations.
