AOL Includes Hanoch Piven in its new AOL Canvas Project

AOL Artists has launched a new project that allows you to choose your AOL.com background from a number of different artists' canvases. Hanoch Piven's "Gloveman" is one of the pieces of original artwork created for this project. Hanoch decided to create his work using the "Faces iMake" iPhone app he helped create with iMagine machine. Hanoch is happy to be selected as one of the AOL Artists.

Hanoch Piven's portrait of Larry King

Hanoch created this portrait of Larry King in 1996 for Haaretz. We wish Larry King good luck in his upcoming retirement. We think Hanoch would be the perfect artist to update Larry's portrait for a magazine cover when he retires.

Earth: Fragile Planet Exhibition

Our artists Greg Clarke, Tatsuro Kiuchi, and Hanoch Piven are all participating in the "Earth: Fragile Planet" exhibition that runs from June 3-July 31. The exhibition is at the Museum of American Illustration in New York, and displays the work of 120 artists who express their personal views about the state of the environment.

Greg Clarke's piece "Adam's Alehouse" was also a Distinguished Merit winner at the 3x3 competition. He says, "My theme was water, and "Adam's Alehouse" was the result. "Adam's Ale" is an archaic reference to the only available beverage to Adam in the Garden of Eden. At the rate we continue to pollute our waters, this image envisions a future where the only access to potable water will be at purified water bars, and even then limited only to creatures of means."

Tatsuro Kiuchi created "Not So Polar Bear" for the exhibition. He says, "I thought it would be striking to show a polar bear in the forest. He is now living in the mountains because there are no ice floats left for him to hunt seals in the arctic. There he is standing with his hands and mouth soaking in blood. I presented the bear being rather cute, not menacing looking at all, to imply that this is the reality, and this is his nature. He doesn't have to be angry. He is just doing what he has to do to stay alive. The earth will keep rotating whether the natural environment is being destroyed or not. "

Hanoch Piven's exhibit at The Skirball Cultural Center

From March 10-July 11, "Making Faces: Playful Portraits of People You Know by Hanoch Piven" will be on exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Hanoch's show will contain 22 portraits of well-known people, including six original collages. Included in the exhibit will be Hanoch's depiction of Barbara Streisand, which won a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators, as well as the other portraits shown here. Greg Clarke and Tatsuro Kiuchi win Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators

We congratulate Greg Clarke and Tatsuro Kiuchi for winning silver medals in the SOI Illustrators 52 contest, as well as our artists Hanoch Piven and Paul Rogers, who also had winning entries. The exhibition will run from January to March of 2010 at the Society headquarters.

Greg's winning artwork is a sequential piece called "The Neurotic Art Collector." Greg says, "This was created for the new edition of BLAB, Monte Beauchamp's venerable series of graphic anthologies. It's always a chance to work with arcane subject matter that might have trouble finding a home elsewhere. Fortunately for me, a story about an anxious art collector happened to resonate with an SOI jury!" "El Gato Oscuro" (Uncommissioned category) will also be in the show. Greg says, "I often amuse myself creating fictitious businesses, and this 'restaurant' in Spain seemed like a nice vehicle for two colors in a pseudo-vintage poster style. Now of course, I'm waiting for an upstart Spanish restauranteur to see it in the annual and purchase the rights."

Tatsuro's silver medal is for the cover of a children's book, Rain Po Po Po, by Japanese writer Naoko Higashi. Tatsuro says, "The book is for toddlers, so I had to use bright colors with simple, strong, and bold compositions. In order to make the book appeal to parents who have either boys or girls, I tried to depict the protagonist being indistinctive of gender by not showing his face fully. (Actually, he is a boy, but the child could be a girl, too.) I am illustrating the second book with Naoko Higashi right now. This book will have cherry blossoms and petals, just like raindrops in Rain Po Po Po.

Tatsuro had six other winning entries, including another illustration from Rain Po Po Po, and three illustrations from The Sea, The Sea, published by The Folio Society. His other two winning images were "The Last Superstar," from Sports Graphic Number magazine and a poster for Green Iran called, "Where is My Vote?"

Hanoch Piven had three portraits chosen, all in the Editorial category. Foreign Policy magazine printed the portrait of "Karl Marx" on its cover, and in numerous editions worldwide. "Barack Obama" was done for the UK edition of Esquire magazine, and "Bernard Madoff" appeared in Time magazine.

Paul Rogers had a winner in the Advertising category, the theme art for the 2009 US Open, commissioned by the United States Tennis Association. The USTA used the artwork on banners, tickets, programs, souvenirs, etc.

The Wilde Years exhibition included works by Hanoch Piven

Last month, The School of Visual Arts held an exhibition celebrating Richard Wilde's 40th anniversary as Chair of Graphic Design and Advertising. Alumnus Hanoch Piven participated in the show and created the illustration used on the cover of the catalog. Hanoch says, "I owe a lot of my early development to both attending Richard's class and to his intuition and advice as Chairman. I was honored when asked to participate in the show and more so to create a portrait of him which was featured on the cover of the catalog." Hanoch Piven interviewed on Fox News in Houston

Hanoch Piven was interviewed yesterday on the Fox 26 News morning show in Houston, Texas. Hanoch is here in the US for a lecture and solo exhibition at the Steve R. Gregg Gallery at the Art Institute of Houston. The exhibition runs until July 3 of this year. He has also given some of his "Drawing with Objects" workshops in New Jersey and Texas.

Communications Arts 50 contest winners

Three of our artists had illustrations chosen for the Communications Arts 50 annual to be published later this year. Hanoch Piven had two portraits chosen, John McCain and Keith Richards. The McCain illustration was published in Maariv, an Israeli newspaper, and was shown at Hanoch's solo exhibition at Sixth and I Synagogue in Washington, DC. His portrait of Keith Richards appeared in Spin magazine.

Tatsuro Kiuchi's winning image was for Sports Graphic Number magazine of Japan. The article was called, "Kazuhiro Kiyohara, The Last Superstar" by Junji Yamagiwa.

Andrew Gross had two oil paintings chosen, Hierophant and Surrender. He also had a series of five mixed media paintings on antique cabinet photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s. All were personal/gallery work for his solo exhibition at Jonathan Levine Gallery in April 2008.

What Cats Are Made of by Hanoch Piven is on sale now

Atheneum, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, has just published What Cats Are Made of by our artist Hanoch Piven. The other titles published in this series are What President's Are Made of and What Athletes Are Made of. Hanoch had great fun working with Ginee Seo, the editor, and Ann Bobco, the art director, illustrating the different cat breeds with objects. He started the book catless last year, but now owns a cat named Blau. The book includes interesting information about each type of cat and general feline facts. The cat on the cover is a Devon rex, a mischievous cat that's been compared to a monkey because of its climbing ability.

Artist Hanoch Piven Creates Strauss Ad Campaign

During the last 6 months, Hanoch Piven has been working on a large ad campaign in Israel for the Strauss Group, a food and beverage company. He has created 12 characters using their products. The campaign's message is "It's amazing what you can create from the simple things in life." Hanoch has spent the last few months in his sister's basement creating television and billboard ads out of chocolates, yogurt, candy, vegetables, and many other Strauss products. He had to hide the candy from his nephews in order to do his work. Strauss says, "internationally-acclaimed artist Hanoch Piven...uses basic products and turns them into something new, big and surprising. Piven created a set of characters comprised of our raw materials…adding his own unique artistic statement to them." Many Political Illustrations during Fall of 2008

Heflinreps continues to receive assignments for illustrations of world leaders by our artists. Hanoch Piven completed three portraits of Barack Obama for Golf Digest, The Progressive, and Esquire UK edition and Angela Merkel for Newsweek. Barack Obama was also the subject of illustrations by Paul Rogers for a Weekly Reader poster and Miguel Gallardo for La Vanguardia newspaper.
