The Wilde Years exhibition included works by Hanoch Piven

Last month, The School of Visual Arts held an exhibition celebrating Richard Wilde's 40th anniversary as Chair of Graphic Design and Advertising. Alumnus Hanoch Piven participated in the show and created the illustration used on the cover of the catalog. Hanoch says, "I owe a lot of my early development to both attending Richard's class and to his intuition and advice as Chairman. I was honored when asked to participate in the show and more so to create a portrait of him which was featured on the cover of the catalog." See the websites below for more information about the exhibit.

Tatsuro Kiuchi illustrates Pen Still Writes and The Sea, The Sea

Pen Still Writes is a 193-page collection of monochrome works that artist Tatsuro Kiuchi selected himself. He says, "They are illustrations for various novels by various writers that have appeared in newspapers and magazines. Along with being the name of my studio, the title, Pen Still Writes, alludes to the literature I illustrate." Tatsuro created all the illustrations in this book digitally with Adobe Photoshop. Tatsuro made this book as a sample to promote on-demand printing, and will send it to you for a shipping and handling fee. Contact him at info@tatsurokiuchi.com to order a copy. Please visit the Dreamers Rise blog below for a review of the book.

Beegee Tolpa illustrates a Target gift card

Target is now selling the "Reindeer Games" gift card illustrated by our artist Beegee Tolpa. Beegee says, "It was a really fun project to work on. Little & Company, the designers, had a clear idea of what they wanted when we started, so there weren't many revisions. Or any, I think! They approved the first thing I sent in. It's gratifying to work for a client like Target because I shop there so much!" Although it doesn't show on the scan, the medals on the reindeer are reflective gold foil.

Paul Rogers illustrates new Thanksgiving stamp set for the Post Office

We are proud to announce that the Post Office has just released a set of four Thanksgiving stamps of iconic scenes illustrated by Paul Rogers. The USPS Fall Philatelic catalog also highlights features of the stamps on the cover and on the edges of all of the pages. Designer Howard Paine first discovered Paul's artwork in the picture book "Jazz ABZ" by Wynton Marsalis. Paul says, "Working with Howard Paine, art director for the USPS, for my first postage stamp was a real pleasure. The challenge for this series of four stamps was to show the complicated and festive scene of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade without showing any licensed characters or even the Macy's store. My idea was to depict the parade from a mid-20th century viewpoint, that way I could avoid the recognizable character balloons from the present day. The rendering style was designed to echo vintage advertising art of the day. The scene also had to be arranged so that each stamp makes a satisfying design when used separately."

The stamps are on sale now in post offices and at http://www.usps.com/. Click on "Buy Stamps & Shop." In the "Stamps" drop-down menu at top, click on "44-cent First Class."

Annabelle Metayer illustrates Utex's 2009 fall/winter collection

For the second time this year, Annabelle Metayer has been commissioned by Utex Fashion Group of Canada to illustrate its upcoming collection. Utex manufactures and markets brands that include Jones New York, Hilary Radley, Daniel Hechter, U&I, and Massimo Moda.

The images are used extensively on their website and are meant to convey the look and feel of the season's portfolio. Posters of the illustrations are also displayed on the facade of the headquarters and in the lobby area.

This project was a lot of fun for Annabelle, including the challenge of drawing fashion-forward men. She particularly enjoyed going to Utex headquarters to take pictures of the actual garments and the briefing about the different brands' identities. Once in her studio, she took great pleasure in adding the small details and colors unique to each collection.

Paul Rogers designs US Open theme art

The US Open Tennis Championship is using theme art designed this year by Paul Rogers. The artwork will be used on banners, tickets, programs, t-shirts, and all types of souvenirs. The tournament runs from August 31-September 13.

Marc Jacobson of the Silverman Group called this winter to see if Paul wanted to submit designs to the USTA. The brief for the project required that any player depicted be generic enough to be either male or female. New York City was a key element, and the flaming ball logo for the US Open had to appear in the final art. Other key words from the brief were “entertainment spectacle," "toughest tennis," and "high energy."

Marc liked a number of the sketches, and Paul developed six color images for presentation to the USTA. On a project like this, Paul tends to over-produce these concept sketches because he doesn’t want to lose the project because of a half-hearted execution of an idea. During the pencil stage, he thought he could successfully execute a strong treatment of a player that would be generic enough to be either male or female. But as he tightened up the image, the figure kept tipping one way or the other, or it just looked like a dude in a skirt. Everyone liked the bridge/tennis net idea. The Brooklyn Bridge doesn’t exactly lead to Queens, so they looked at some other bridge options, but in the end they kept Brooklyn as the strongest symbol of New York.
