Paul Rogers is included in Graphic book of designers

UK's Thames & Hudson has just published Graphic. Inside the Sketchbooks of the World's Great Graphic Designers by Steven Heller and Lita Talarico. The book features 100 of the world's leading graphic designers, including our artist Paul Rogers. The book is also available from Monacelli Press in the United States.

Paul says, "Last year, Steven Heller asked for some scans from my sketchbooks for a book he was putting together. I'm delighted to be included in this new book with so many artists I admire."

Sonia Pulido teams with Pere Joan for a new graphic novel

Ediciones Sins Entido in Spain has recently published the new graphic novel, Duelo de Carocoles (Snail Duel), with illustrations by our artist Sonia Pulido. Pere Joan created the story about seven friends who get together for a meal. Two of the friends argue over their respective methods of cooking snails. It starts out in a country house on a mountainside and then moves to a nearby cove.

Meilo So's latest children's book

So & Co. Books is now selling The Grumpy Old Sailor written by Janice Armstrong and illustrated by our artist Meilo So. The book project took two years to finish. It is the first of four books by the pair. A young boy named Magnus tells the story of the old sailor who lives in the Shetland Islands. Mike McDonnell of The Shetland Times says, "Since Meilo had over all control of the production, the final result is a very professionally finished book which does full justice to the lavish illustrations; the inserted 'spy glass' on the front cover is a nice touch. At one stage, the children in the book burst into a chorus of What Shall We Do With A Grumpy Sailor, and the answer is easy, buy the book!" The pictures are from the book launch at the Shetland Museum.

Owen Freeman is working on a series of covers for HarperCollins UK

Artist Owen Freeman just finished the cover of Naked Lunch: The Restored Text for HarperCollins UK, and is currently working on a series of re-issues of books by William Burroughs. Owen says, "Given Burroughs's visceral narrative style, I sketched out as many visual cues as possible while reading, keeping an eye out for those which continued throughout the book. Also, the flexibility to take the imagery in as many strange directions as needed was a huge help to the process, thanks to the art direction of Jo Walker." Faber and Faber commissions Miguel Gallardo for pocket guide series

Miguel Gallardo is in the midst of illustrating about 30 new paperback covers for Faber and Faber. In 2009, Faber released the first two books in the series, Haydn and Handel. Wagner and Britten will be published in 2010. Miguel is currently working on the illustration for the Pocket Guide to Bach.

Miguel Gallardo's latest book covers for Planeta

Our artist Miguel Gallardo has been very busy lately illustrating book covers for Planeta DeAgostini publishers in Spain. Planeta is re-issuing a series of books of the best writers of the 20th century under its Destino imprint. Miguel is working on five titles for the series. The last one is a novel by Delibes (not shown). Included here is La Vieja Sirena (The Old Mermaid), another cover Miguel did for Destino.

Jazz ABZ Exhibition at The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Cummer Museum in Jacksonville, Florida, will be showing "Jazz ABZ: An A to Z Collection of Jazz Portraits by Paul Rogers" from January 20 through August 8. My Personal Diary, illustrated by Annabelle Metayer, is on sale in Canada

Artist Annabelle Metayer recently held a book signing for her new release, My Personal Diary, published by Broquet, Inc., in Canada. The signing was at Salon Du Livre in Montreal in late November. The book is designed for French-speaking tweens in Canada and Europe. Annabelle created all the illustrations for the 14 themed sections, which include movies, music, and travel. It also has space for journaling and scrapbooking.

Tatsuro Kiuchi illustrates Pen Still Writes and The Sea, The Sea

Pen Still Writes is a 193-page collection of monochrome works that artist Tatsuro Kiuchi selected himself. He says, "They are illustrations for various novels by various writers that have appeared in newspapers and magazines. Along with being the name of my studio, the title, Pen Still Writes, alludes to the literature I illustrate." Tatsuro created all the illustrations in this book digitally with Adobe Photoshop. Ilene Winn-Lederer finishes her illustrated Torah for Pomegranate

Ilene Winn-Lederer has finished working on a five-year book project for Pomegranate Books. Between Heaven and Earth: An Illustrated Torah Commentary will be published this summer. The project has been the biggest creative challenge of Ilene's career, and here's what she has to say about working on it:

"Since I had determined that Between Heaven & Earth: An Illustrated Torah Commentary would be primarily a work of art, I decided not to render the entire text of the Old Testament. Instead, I read extensively and repeatedly through the text in order to choose quotations that spoke to me as an artist. At that point, I requested and obtained permission to use portions of an authorized English translation in my book. I was then faced with designing the core of this project. Figuring out a visual language to express the complex codes for ethical living, the byzantine cast of characters, historical events, and codes for ethical living that is the Torah required nearly two years alone. The research, book design, and illustration became an integral part of my life, permeating even the most ordinary activities. The illustrations are rendered in what I like to call 'tradigital' media; an intuitive fusion of traditional pen and ink drawing with digital design.

Because I expected that my drawings might raise more questions than they answered, I kept detailed notes throughout the research and working process, organizing and shaping them into the cohesive, documented commentary that accompanies the illustrations. This in itself was a job equal in complexity to the visual portion of the project. The result, while completely labor-intensive, has also been a labor of love. It will, I hope, be a treasured inspirational and learning resource for generations to come."
