Greg Clarke receives a Distinguished Merit Award at the 3x3 Pro Show

Greg Clarke's "Adam's Alehouse" has received a Distinguished Merit Award in the Self-Promotion category at this year's 3x3 Pro Show. "El Gato Oscuro" was also a Merit winner in the Self-Promotion category.

Greg says, "As a self-promotion project, I wanted to create a series of posters for fictitious food/beverage establishments. After completing the 'El Gato Oscuro' piece, I was invited to participate in the Earth: Fragile Planet exhibition at the Society of Illustrators in New York (opening June 4, 2010). I decided to create another poster in the style of 'El Gato.' My theme was water, and 'Adam's Alehouse' was the result. 'Adam's Ale' is an archaic reference to the only available beverage to Adam in the Garden of Eden. At the rate we continue to pollute our waters, this image envisions a future where the only access to potable water will be at purified water bars, and even then limited only to creatures of means."

Heflinreps American Illustration 29 Winners

Congratulations to our artists Tatsuro Kiuchi and Kathy Osborn for their winning entries in the AI 29 contest.

Tatsuro had two winning illustrations for an essay series titled, "Alleys of Japan in the 1950s." They were for a magazine issued by Zenriren, a Japanese association of hairstylists and barbers. Kathy's winning entry is a personal piece called, "God Knows."

Greg Clarke and Tatsuro Kiuchi win Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators

We congratulate Greg Clarke and Tatsuro Kiuchi for winning silver medals in the SOI Illustrators 52 contest, as well as our artists Hanoch Piven and Paul Rogers, who also had winning entries. The exhibition will run from January to March of 2010 at the Society headquarters.

Greg's winning artwork is a sequential piece called "The Neurotic Art Collector." Greg says, "This was created for the new edition of BLAB, Monte Beauchamp's venerable series of graphic anthologies. It's always a chance to work with arcane subject matter that might have trouble finding a home elsewhere. Fortunately for me, a story about an anxious art collector happened to resonate with an SOI jury!" "El Gato Oscuro" (Uncommissioned category) will also be in the show. Greg says, "I often amuse myself creating fictitious businesses, and this 'restaurant' in Spain seemed like a nice vehicle for two colors in a pseudo-vintage poster style. Now of course, I'm waiting for an upstart Spanish restauranteur to see it in the annual and purchase the rights."

Tatsuro's silver medal is for the cover of a children's book, Rain Po Po Po, by Japanese writer Naoko Higashi. Tatsuro says, "The book is for toddlers, so I had to use bright colors with simple, strong, and bold compositions. In order to make the book appeal to parents who have either boys or girls, I tried to depict the protagonist being indistinctive of gender by not showing his face fully. (Actually, he is a boy, but the child could be a girl, too.) I am illustrating the second book with Naoko Higashi right now. This book will have cherry blossoms and petals, just like raindrops in Rain Po Po Po.

Tatsuro had six other winning entries, including another illustration from Rain Po Po Po, and three illustrations from The Sea, The Sea, published by The Folio Society. His other two winning images were "The Last Superstar," from Sports Graphic Number magazine and a poster for Green Iran called, "Where is My Vote?"

Hanoch Piven had three portraits chosen, all in the Editorial category. Foreign Policy magazine printed the portrait of "Karl Marx" on its cover, and in numerous editions worldwide. "Barack Obama" was done for the UK edition of Esquire magazine, and "Bernard Madoff" appeared in Time magazine.

Paul Rogers had a winner in the Advertising category, the theme art for the 2009 US Open, commissioned by the United States Tennis Association. The USTA used the artwork on banners, tickets, programs, souvenirs, etc.

Tatsuro Kiuchi illustrates Pen Still Writes and The Sea, The Sea

Pen Still Writes is a 193-page collection of monochrome works that artist Tatsuro Kiuchi selected himself. He says, "They are illustrations for various novels by various writers that have appeared in newspapers and magazines. Beegee Tolpa finishes first pop-up book

Beegee Tolpa recently finished working on a new children's book for Penguin. It's a pop-up book called Everyone Says I Love You, that will be published in the fall. The book shows different people and scenes from all over the world, including Paris, Venice, the Statue of Liberty, Africa and the Netherlands. Beegee says, "Working on it was really fun but also a challenge. I had a fantastic paper engineer (Michael Caputo) who would send me files, like puzzle pieces, and I'd have to illustrate on the different shapes, not truly knowing what it would look like until it was all put together. I had a steep learning curve (and a fast one! the whole book was illustrated in under two months). Once I got the hang of it, it was great fun." Update: Beegee's book won Second Place, Children's Trade, Pop-up Books, at the 2010 New York Book Show.

Miguel Gallardo's "Maria and Me" being made into a documentary movie

"Maria and Me," Miguel Gallardo's book about his autistic daughter Maria, is being made into a documentary movie by director Felix Fernandez de Castro. TVE and Bausan are producing the film for the movies and television. The film will have some animated parts that Miguel and his girlfriend are creating. Miguel and Maria began filming this month in the Canary Islands, and production will continue all year. Miguel says that the first shoot was fantastic. The director has some good ideas, and Maria did well during it. They shot the first scenes at a resort for German tourists, including using an underwater camera to capture them swimming in the pool. They are now travelling to Las Palmas to film at Maria's school and home.

In related news, Miguel has won the comic award from the Professional Association of Illustrators of Catalonia for "Maria and Me." He also has a solo exhibition of his cartoon career starting May 26 at the Galeria Victor Saavedra in Barcelona. "6 in One" includes 120 pieces and coincides with the International Comic Festival.

Heflinreps American Illustration 28 Winners

Our artists Alex Gross, Tatsuro Kiuchi, Paul Rogers, and Sonia Pulido have had artwork selected for the AI 28 annual book due out in November 2009. Miguel Gallardo also had pieces chosen for the website.

Alex Gross has a series of four mixed-media paintings on antique cabinet photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Two of them were also selected for Communications Arts 50, along with three other cabinet cards and two paintings.

Tatsuro Kiuchi has two works selected: an image from "The Sea, The Sea" by Iris Murdoch and "Kazuhiro Kiyohara, The Last Superstar," from Sports Graphic Number magazine. Tatsuro recently illustrated "The Sea, The Sea" for the Folio Society in the UK. "Kazuhiro Kiyohara" was also chosen for CA 50 this year.

Paul Rogers will have "Nobody Plays Handball Anymore" published in the annual, an image from his sketchbook. He was in Greenwich Village last year and saw this playground roller-hockey game, and the scene reminded him of the great playground scene by Ben Shahn called "Handball."

"Friends" is the title of Sonia Pulido's selected illustration from her personal work. Miguel Gallardo had two images chosen for the AI 28 website. Miguel's first chosen piece was "Melancholy," published in La Vanguardia's Sunday magazine. Miguel got his inspiration from Dali's soft watches and DeChirico's illustrations of sadness. His other chosen piece was "VIPs in Hollywood" published in LA Confidential magazine.

Communications Arts 50 contest winners

Three of our artists had illustrations chosen for the Communications Arts 50 annual to be published later this year. Hanoch Piven had two portraits chosen, John McCain and Keith Richards. The McCain illustration was published in Maariv, an Israeli newspaper, and was shown at Hanoch's solo exhibition at Sixth and I Synagogue in Washington, DC. His portrait of Keith Richards appeared in Spin magazine.

Tatsuro Kiuchi's winning image was for Sports Graphic Number magazine of Japan. The article was called, "Kazuhiro Kiyohara, The Last Superstar" by Junji Yamagiwa.

Andrew Gross had two oil paintings chosen, Hierophant and Surrender. He also had a series of five mixed media paintings on antique cabinet photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s. All were personal/gallery work for his solo exhibition at Jonathan Levine Gallery in April 2008.

Tatsuro Kiuchi and Paul Rogers honored by the Society of Illustrators

Tatsuro Kiuchi and Paul Rogers will both have artwork exhibited at Illustrators 51 at the Museum of American Illustration in New York. The show runs from January 7 to March 28 in three separate categories. Please visit the SOI website below to see the dates for each category.

Tatsuro Kiuchi had six illustrations chosen for the show, including "The Snow Angel" for the 2007 Starbucks Holiday Campaign and "It Never Is," an illustration for a story about Texas Hold'em in Hemispheres magazine. 3 x 3 Magazine and American Illustration have already honored "Travelling with Four-Legged Friends." "Ya-te-veo," the man-eating tree, was also selected for the American Illustration annual. The last two winners are "Better Days," an illustration for an elder care magazine, and "The Apple Store in Ginza," a personal piece for the group exhibition of the Tokyo Illustrators Society.

Paul Rogers has an illustration of Ralph Branca done in his sketchbook style. The illustration was for an American Express coffee table book of charter card members designed by VSA Partners.

Heflinreps American Illustration 27 Winners

Our artists Greg Clarke, Miguel Gallardo, Tatsuro Kiuchi, and Rutu Modan have artwork selected for the AI 27 annual book due out in February 2009. Joe Morse and Ilene Winn-Lederer also have pieces chosen for the website.

Greg Clarke has a series of six images he did for Real Simple Magazine selected called "You've Got Mice." He also has a New York Times Book Review cover chosen for the website only. Miguel Gallardo has a personal piece called "Barcelona Skyline" selected for the book and three other editorial images chosen for the website.

Tatsuro Kiuchi has three works selected: "Pass the Cheer," part of the 2007 Starbucks holiday campaign, "Ya-te-veo," an illustration for the book Beasts!, and "New Year Travel," an illustration of animals on a plane that also received the Bronze medal in the 3x3 Pro Show.

Rutu Modan will have "Stranger's Eyes" published in the annual, an image for a CD booklet. Chosen for the website are Joe Morse's illustration of "Snoop Dog" for Rolling Stone and two images by Ilene Winn-Lederer, "Betrayal & Rebellion," and "The Beast of Mass Destruction." They are both from her upcoming book, "Between Heaven & Earth," from Pomegranate.
