Sonia Pulido's solo exhibition in Barcelona

Gallery CMTV in Barcelona, Spain, is now showing Sonia Pulido's Picnic! exhibition until October 23. This is a new gallery working with some of the most interesting artists on the current scene. Most of the work is collage, but Sonia is also including her "Death in the Maiden" comic series. Sonia published these in her catalog, Separar Por Colores, which accompanied her solo show of the same name at the comic convention in Seville last year. The last two pictures show Sonia's studio when she was preparing the collages for the exhibition.

Alex Gross's Discrepancies exhibit opens at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York is now showing the Discrepancies solo exhibition by our artist Alex Gross. As Alex stated in his exclusive Juxtapoz interview, "A discrepancy is a small but significant difference in two or more things that should be the same. The imagery that I paint appears realistic, and yet, there is almost always something a bit off, different." In conjunction with the show, Alex has also released a book of the same title, published by Gingko Press. Discrepancies is the product of two and a half years of work. The show contains nineteen paintings on canvas, panel and paper, as well as twenty-seven small mixed media pieces done directly upon antique photographs. It runs through October 9.

Earth: Fragile Planet Exhibition

Our artists Greg Clarke, Tatsuro Kiuchi, and Hanoch Piven are all participating in the "Earth: Fragile Planet" exhibition that runs from June 3-July 31. The exhibition is at the Museum of American Illustration in New York, and displays the work of 120 artists who express their personal views about the state of the environment.

Greg Clarke's piece "Adam's Alehouse" was also a Distinguished Merit winner at the 3x3 competition. He says, "My theme was water, and "Adam's Alehouse" was the result. "Adam's Ale" is an archaic reference to the only available beverage to Adam in the Garden of Eden. At the rate we continue to pollute our waters, this image envisions a future where the only access to potable water will be at purified water bars, and even then limited only to creatures of means."

Tatsuro Kiuchi created "Not So Polar Bear" for the exhibition. He says, "I thought it would be striking to show a polar bear in the forest. He is now living in the mountains because there are no ice floats left for him to hunt seals in the arctic. There he is standing with his hands and mouth soaking in blood. I presented the bear being rather cute, not menacing looking at all, to imply that this is the reality, and this is his nature. He doesn't have to be angry. He is just doing what he has to do to stay alive. The earth will keep rotating whether the natural environment is being destroyed or not. "

Greg Clarke receives a Distinguished Merit Award at the 3x3 Pro Show

Greg Clarke's "Adam's Alehouse" has received a Distinguished Merit Award in the Self-Promotion category at this year's 3x3 Pro Show. "El Gato Oscuro" was also a Merit winner in the Self-Promotion category.

Greg says, "As a self-promotion project, I wanted to create a series of posters for fictitious food/beverage establishments. After completing the 'El Gato Oscuro' piece, I was invited to participate in the Earth: Fragile Planet exhibition at the Society of Illustrators in New York (opening June 4, 2010). I decided to create another poster in the style of 'El Gato.' My theme was water, and 'Adam's Alehouse' was the result. 'Adam's Ale' is an archaic reference to the only available beverage to Adam in the Garden of Eden. Hanoch Piven's exhibit at The Skirball Cultural Center

From March 10-July 11, "Making Faces: Playful Portraits of People You Know by Hanoch Piven" will be on exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Hanoch's show will contain 22 portraits of well-known people, including six original collages. Included in the exhibit will be Hanoch's depiction of Barbara Streisand, which won a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators, as well as the other portraits shown here. Ilene Winn-Lederer and Joe Morse participate in 2009 tapestry project

Recently, 44 artists from around the world created a New Bayeux Tapestry depicting events from each week in 2009. Ilene Winn-Lederer illustrated 3 weeks in April for the tapestry, and Joe Morse illustrated the week with July 4. The original Bayeux Tapestry was stitched together by unknown French women and showed current events from 1066. The new version is about 70 feet long, and is on exhibit at Steendrukkerij Amsterdam gallery until February 2. For more information, visit the website below.

Jazz ABZ Exhibition at The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Cummer Museum in Jacksonville, Florida, will be showing "Jazz ABZ: An A to Z Collection of Jazz Portraits by Paul Rogers" from January 20 through August 8. The Wilde Years exhibition included works by Hanoch Piven

Last month, The School of Visual Arts held an exhibition celebrating Richard Wilde's 40th anniversary as Chair of Graphic Design and Advertising. Alumnus Hanoch Piven participated in the show and created the illustration used on the cover of the catalog. Hanoch says, "I owe a lot of my early development to both attending Richard's class and to his intuition and advice as Chairman. I was honored when asked to participate in the show and more so to create a portrait of him which was featured on the cover of the catalog." Ed Parker exhibits at New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI

Artist Ed Parker was recently invited to participate in an exhibition of marine art at the New York Yacht Club mansion in Newport, RI, during the weekend of October 10-12. The exhibit, "Modern Masters of Marine Art," was organized by the J. Russell Jinishian Gallery of Fairfield, CT.

The participating artists were guests of the NYYC for the weekend, stayed at the club's Harbor Court facilities, and participated in a variety of demonstrations and arts-related activities. Three of Ed's paintings were featured at the gallery exhibit and a fourth was created as part of a marine arts demonstration workshop.

Paul Rogers illustrates entrance graphics for the National Infantry Museum

On June 19, the National Infantry Museum had its grand opening in Columbus, Georgia. Paul says, "It was an honor to work on a project for The National Infantry Museum in Fort Benning. The new museum tells the story of America’s ground soldiers from the colonial period to the present day. The exhibit design and museum planning firm, Christopher Chadbourne & Associates, asked me to design six posters that would be used as large entry graphics for each of the main galleries. The idea was to give the pieces a twentieth century war poster vibe that would set the tone for each segment of the story, and would work well with the wealth of information and artifacts in the museum. These images required a serious level of research to be sure that the details were correct."

Miguel Gallardo's "Maria and Me" being made into a documentary movie

"Maria and Me," Miguel Gallardo's book about his autistic daughter Maria, is being made into a documentary movie by director Felix Fernandez de Castro. TVE and Bausan are producing the film for the movies and television. The film will have some animated parts that Miguel and his girlfriend are creating. Miguel and Maria began filming this month in the Canary Islands, and production will continue all year. Miguel says that the first shoot was fantastic. The director has some good ideas, and Maria did well during it. They shot the first scenes at a resort for German tourists, including using an underwater camera to capture them swimming in the pool. They are now travelling to Las Palmas to film at Maria's school and home.

In related news, Miguel has won the comic award from the Professional Association of Illustrators of Catalonia for "Maria and Me." He also has a solo exhibition of his cartoon career starting May 26 at the Galeria Victor Saavedra in Barcelona. "6 in One" includes 120 pieces and coincides with the International Comic Festival.

Hanoch Piven interviewed on Fox News in Houston

Hanoch Piven was interviewed yesterday on the Fox 26 News morning show in Houston, Texas. Hanoch is here in the US for a lecture and solo exhibition at the Steve R. Gregg Gallery at the Art Institute of Houston. The exhibition runs until July 3 of this year. He has also given some of his "Drawing with Objects" workshops in New Jersey and Texas.
