Paul Rogers illustrates The Frozen Rabbi for Tablet

Since the beginning of this month, Paul Rogers has been doing illustrations to accompany the serialization of "The Frozen Rabbi" novel by Steve Stern. The illustrations are for Tablet, an online magazine. The story is about a nineteenth-century rabbi from a small Polish town who is encased in a block of ice and turns up in the basement freezer of a twenty-first-century Memphis home. Tablet is running daily installments of the novel over a period of nine weeks. Paul says, "At first, art director Len Small wanted one drawing per week, but the story is so rich that I agreed to do a drawing a day. I really like the idea of reviving the serialized novel online." All the illustrations to date are on Tablet's website below.

Hanoch Piven's exhibit at The Skirball Cultural Center

From March 10-July 11, "Making Faces: Playful Portraits of People You Know by Hanoch Piven" will be on exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Hanoch's show will contain 22 portraits of well-known people, including six original collages. Included in the exhibit will be Hanoch's depiction of Barbara Streisand, which won a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators, as well as the other portraits shown here. Metro Design Studio and Paul Rogers team up for campaign

Paul Rogers continues to illustrate metro stations and modes of transportation for the Los Angeles Metro Transit Authority. He's been out scouting various locations in an around the L. A. area for reference photos for over 40 illustrations for the MTA. They are being used in the Past, Present and Future campaign as posters, brochures, billboards, signs, etc.

Poketo.com sells wallet designed by Jared Schorr

The Poketo online store is now selling a wallet designed by Jared Schorr as part of a series of cut paper wallets. The first picture shows the outside of the wallet, and the second is the interior. Janet Lee of Poketo interviewed Jared on the Poketo blog about his design. He said, "I wanted to do a wallet with a lot of monsters running and having fun, kind of like a Ryan McGinley photo. You don't really know what is going on, but you wish you were there. Though the monsters are running for their lives, they are still enjoying themselves." Poetry Magazine publishes four covers by our artists

Greg Clarke, Kathy Osborn and Tatsuro Kiuchi had some great covers on four recent issues of Poetry Magazine. Greg's illustrations in November and February were "The Poet Takes a Walk" and "The Codependents." Kathy's illustration from the June issue was "The Good Egg," and Tatsuro's "On the Beach" graced the July cover.

Faber and Faber commissions Miguel Gallardo for pocket guide series

Miguel Gallardo is in the midst of illustrating about 30 new paperback covers for Faber and Faber. In 2009, Faber released the first two books in the series, Haydn and Handel. Wagner and Britten will be published in 2010. Miguel is currently working on the illustration for the Pocket Guide to Bach.

Dennis Balogh's portrait in Success magazine

Dennis recently completed a multiple-pose portrait of Jim Rohn for Success Magazine. Dennis really captured his vitality and made it look as if he drew him from real life. Dennis says, "When beginning the painting stage I paint very loosely in a transparent wash and early on introduce broad spontaneous brush strokes, some of which I lose in the course of the painting. My constant goal is to keep liveliness with my technique, remembering that I'm painting and not just trying to duplicate an image. Every face has its strong characteristics that I try to accentuate with pencil line and brush work. Midway through and when I finalize the painting, I apply opaque brushwork that accents and gives the art its overall color strength."

Ilene Winn-Lederer and Joe Morse participate in 2009 tapestry project

Recently, 44 artists from around the world created a New Bayeux Tapestry depicting events from each week in 2009. Ilene Winn-Lederer illustrated 3 weeks in April for the tapestry, and Joe Morse illustrated the week with July 4. The original Bayeux Tapestry was stitched together by unknown French women and showed current events from 1066. The new version is about 70 feet long, and is on exhibit at Steendrukkerij Amsterdam gallery until February 2. For more information, visit the website below.

Miguel Gallardo's latest book covers for Planeta

Our artist Miguel Gallardo has been very busy lately illustrating book covers for Planeta DeAgostini publishers in Spain. Planeta is re-issuing a series of books of the best writers of the 20th century under its Destino imprint. Miguel is working on five titles for the series. The last one is a novel by Delibes (not shown). Included here is La Vieja Sirena (The Old Mermaid), another cover Miguel did for Destino.

Greg Clarke and Tatsuro Kiuchi win Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators

We congratulate Greg Clarke and Tatsuro Kiuchi for winning silver medals in the SOI Illustrators 52 contest, as well as our artists Hanoch Piven and Paul Rogers, who also had winning entries. The exhibition will run from January to March of 2010 at the Society headquarters.

Greg's winning artwork is a sequential piece called "The Neurotic Art Collector." Greg says, "This was created for the new edition of BLAB, Monte Beauchamp's venerable series of graphic anthologies. It's always a chance to work with arcane subject matter that might have trouble finding a home elsewhere. Fortunately for me, a story about an anxious art collector happened to resonate with an SOI jury!" "El Gato Oscuro" (Uncommissioned category) will also be in the show. Greg says, "I often amuse myself creating fictitious businesses, and this 'restaurant' in Spain seemed like a nice vehicle for two colors in a pseudo-vintage poster style. Now of course, I'm waiting for an upstart Spanish restauranteur to see it in the annual and purchase the rights."

Tatsuro's silver medal is for the cover of a children's book, Rain Po Po Po, by Japanese writer Naoko Higashi. Tatsuro says, "The book is for toddlers, so I had to use bright colors with simple, strong, and bold compositions. In order to make the book appeal to parents who have either boys or girls, I tried to depict the protagonist being indistinctive of gender by not showing his face fully. (Actually, he is a boy, but the child could be a girl, too.) I am illustrating the second book with Naoko Higashi right now. This book will have cherry blossoms and petals, just like raindrops in Rain Po Po Po.

Tatsuro had six other winning entries, including another illustration from Rain Po Po Po, and three illustrations from The Sea, The Sea, published by The Folio Society. His other two winning images were "The Last Superstar," from Sports Graphic Number magazine and a poster for Green Iran called, "Where is My Vote?"

Hanoch Piven had three portraits chosen, all in the Editorial category. Foreign Policy magazine printed the portrait of "Karl Marx" on its cover, and in numerous editions worldwide. "Barack Obama" was done for the UK edition of Esquire magazine, and "Bernard Madoff" appeared in Time magazine.

Paul Rogers had a winner in the Advertising category, the theme art for the 2009 US Open, commissioned by the United States Tennis Association. The USTA used the artwork on banners, tickets, programs, souvenirs, etc.
